FRED CONLON CONTEMPORARY SCULPTURE AWARD

 

Sligo County Council Arts Service invites visual artists, particularly sculptors, to apply for the Fred Conlon Contemporary Sculpture Award 2012.

This award offers artists the opportunity to avail of studio and living facilities for two months in the inspiring scenic region of Easkey, West Sligo and one month in the Leitrim Sculpture Centre followed by a solo exhibition in the Leitrim Sculpture Centre upon completion of the residency. Dates of the residency are fixed between mid January and mid April 2013.

Fred Conlon

This award was established by Sligo County Council under the Space for Art Sligo Arts Plan 2007-2012 to honour the late sculptor Fred Conlon, a native of west Sligo. Fred Conlon supported generations of young artists in his life and work and this award pays tribute to his contribution to the cultural life of the region. An initiative of Sligo Arts Service, the award is delivered in partnership with the Conlon Family and the Leitrim Sculpture Centre. The residency is for visual artists, particularly sculptors, who wish to advance their work or create a new body of work.

Cró na gCearc, the Fred Conlon Residential Studio, provides a progressive artist space set in the rural farmland of County Sligo, 1 mile from the village of Easkey. The detached, modern studio is in converted outbuildings on the grounds of the residence, a well furnished, comfortable house. The ground floor spacious studio comprises of approximately 600 sq. foot open plan studio. Natural light, hot water, heating, wash room and utility area. The art-making process is the highest priority at the Fred Conlon Studio where both atmosphere and environment offer ideal situations for creative growth and experimentation.
